  FIBER SENSING USED TO DETECT SECURITY BREACH  
    With a renewed interest in security, Perimeter Intrusion is an emerging business with significant growth. Using the interferometer properties of fiber optics, light can be transmitted into a fiber and the reflections from the light can be processed to provide audible information of the span of the fiber cable. In other words, the fiber cable itself can be turned into a long, yet precise microphone which can pick up very low levels of sound energy. The collection of sounds generated through light can be filtered to yield only those sounds that are concerns for security personnel. Additionally, the point at which the sound originated can be quickly located and video and/or personnel can be dispatched to the location immediately. For this application connector insertion and return loss performance is critical and the application typically requires that the connector system be installed outside. For multi-channel applications F-LINK Fiber Optic or Hybrid Fiber Optic connector are required. For simplex applications, The MIL-C-83522 with Rain Guard sealing feature is recommended for outdoor applications.
